Critically-acclaimed Author, Philip Beard & The Fox Chapel Book Buddies discuss DEAR ZOE
Critically-acclaimed author Philip Beard's stunning debut is an epistolary novel written from fifteen-year-old Tess DeNunzio to her little sister Zoe. After Zoe's accidental death on September 11, 2001—a day so many others died—Tess's family is numbed by their personal tragedy. Already acutely aware of her odd place in a home where her mother and stepfather now have children of their own, Tess begins her letter as a means of figuring out her own life—from her two-hour-a-day hair and makeup ritual to her complicity in Zoe's death. Only after she moves in with her real father, a well-intentioned deadbeat, and stumbles into a halting romance with the sweet but aimless boy next door, does Tess begin to open her heart once more. Not since The Lovely Bones has there been a study of grief, adolescence, and healing that rings as true as Dear Zoe. In Tess, a girl on the verge of womanhood, Beard has crafted a pitch-perfect narrator and a debut novel of rare power and grace that will remain with readers long after the book is put down.
DEAR ZOE was named one of Booklist's Ten Best First Novels of 2005 and the audio version of DEAR ZOE won an AudioFile Earphone Award. To date DEAR ZOE and has been translated into three languages and continues to touch readers hearts around the world.
In Beard’s second novel, LOST IN THE GARDEN tells the story of over-privileged, under motivated, golf-and-sex-obsessed Michael Benedict, as he navigates a mid-life crisis that is both hilarious and compelling. As he did in his powerful debut novel, Philip Beard has created a voice so authentic you won’t read it so much as you will hear it. A deft tightrope walk between heartbreak and hilarity, LOST IN THE GARDEN is a sports book that’s about everything but sports, a man’s book that’s just as much for women, and a novel for anyone who wakes up some mornings feeling like life is a work in progress.
Philip Beard was educated at Colgate University, the University Of Pittsburgh - School Of Law, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Education. He lives with his wife, Traci, and daughters Cali, Madelynne, and Phoebe in Aspinwall, Pennsylvania, where he writes, practices law, and coaches the varsity golf team at Shady Side Academy.
The Fox Chapel Book Buddies began as a neighborhood book group in the fall of 2003. They have expanded to include members from several neighborhoods. They have over 20 members, but average 12 - 14 at each meeting weekly. At one meeting the author of Majuba House, Joyce Brogdon, came from North Carolina to address their book group. They have since read books on the Johnstown Flood, the Amish and have gone on field trips to compliment the books. They also attended the movie The DaVinci Code together and attended a lecture by the author of Running with Scissors. This year their reading list includes The Known World by Edward P. Jones, Dear Zoe, Lost in the Garden by Philip Beard, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron, Me & Emma by Elizabeth Flock, The Work of Wolves by Kent Myers, The Year of Pleasure by Elizabeth Berg, Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris, March by Geraldine Brooks, and The Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards. They enjoy lively discussions of the books as well as the food, wine, and fellowship.
