New York Times Bestselling Author, Mary Monroe & The RAWSISTAZ Literary Group discuss Mary’s latest novel GOD DON’T PLAY
New York Times bestselling author Mary Monroe weaves the gripping story of lifelong friends Annette Goode and Rhoda Nelson. They’ve weathered secrets, lies—and even murder—but the challenge they now face may destroy their relationship once and for all...With a handsome husband, a beautiful daughter, and a lovely house to come home to every night, it looks like forty-five-year-old Annette Goode finally has it all. And heaven knows she paid her dues to get it—from a childhood filled with abuse to a rocky start as an adult. Annette’s friend Rhoda knows too, for Rhoda has been both her savior and her greatest fear. Their erratic relationship has survived some serious bumps in the road, and now things are good. But apparently someone thinks Annette has it a little too good…
When Annette receives an anonymous—and menacing—birthday gift, it is just the beginning of a slew of hostile letters, vicious phone calls, and vile packages from a female who is obviously disguising her voice. Soon nasty notes about Annette are also being circulated throughout her community. But despite the onslaught, Annette has no clue who the harasser is, or what is behind her contempt.
Gaining comfort from the support of Rhoda and Rhoda’s teenage daughter, Jade, Annette hopes that somehow the problem will just go away. But when the threats extend to her little daughter, Annette realizes the situation is dire. And she’s right, for soon her tormentor reveals exactly what she wants—and claims to have been playing a role in Annette’s life all along. To make matters worse, she provides evidence that may destroy everything Annette has built…
Just as Annette reaches the brink of what she can bear, her mysterious enemy challenges her to a face-to-face showdown. It is a meeting that will not only shock Annette, but will forever change the lives of those closest to her…
NYT bestselling author Mary Monroe is known for insightful, entertaining and poignant stories spun around the complicated dynamics between friends, lovers and family, and the atrocious situations people, being people, create, often despite themselves. A writer in touch with her own and others’ humanity, Monroe continually builds upon her own and others’ experiences to shape her fictional world, giving her characters’ voices that ring true for readers.
Monroe was born in rural Toxey, Alabama to Otis and Ocie Mae Nicholson. After her father’s death, her mother remarried and moved the family to Alliance, Ohio. Monroe was seven, and started second grade there. It was there that she first went to a library, and her life was changed forever.
Monroe credits reading with changing her life, noting that “Reading made me realize that I had more options than I’d been taught to believe.”
The Reading and Writing SISTAZ (RAWSISTAZ) Literary Group was founded by Tee C. Royal on September 16, 2000 and focuses on reading, writing, and discussing books primarily by, for, and about African-Americans. The group was initially to be a small branch off of the SISTAZ email loop, but because of the overwhelming interest from women outside the organization, a separate entity was needed to accommodate the incoming requests for membership. RAWSISTAZ consists of the main group (RAWSISTAZ Online Book Club), a literary hang-out (RAW4ALL-- which is open to men), eight local chapters (RAWSISTAZ Live) in major cities across the United States, and a team of reviewers (The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers). The groups, on and offline, represent close to 500 readers, writers, aspiring writers, and others interested in literacy and the impact on our communities. The online book club consists of approximately 70 women who are spread across the globe reaching as far as Japan & England. It is also a "home" for a lot of the members who have established bonds with one another which allow them to call each other "Sis" thus solidifying the book club motto of "Combining Literature and Sisterhood." The main motto of RAWSISTAZ Literary Group is "Keeping you In the Know regarding the African-American literary community."
RAWSISTAZ is a valuable resource to those in the industry and those aspiring to be. They promote literacy amongst the African-American community, encourage authors to follow their dreams and inspire the open exchange of literary information. Through free newsletters, their various groups, literary services via their websites, and a review team with a repository of 4000+ reviews, RAWSISTAZ is more than a book club; it is a literary legacy.
RAWSISTAZ was selected as one of Writer’s Digest Top 101 Sites for Writers, and has been mentioned in Essence, Black Issues Book Review, Black Expressions, AMAG Magazine, Upscale, and other literary sites and ezines.
